Research

Research

To start me off I searched the internet for some movie and video game concept art- because I know this is the kind of route I want to explore.

While researching concept art I came across the art of Into the Spider-verse.

Reflection:

this has helped me:

  • research and understand other artists styles, and how they can be replicated

  • start to understand perspective and lighting

  • It has given me a starting point for the kind of style I will use.

  • I now know that is is the route I want to take my project- movie art

Creating a response

I used a photo I took Of the Tyne bridge

in Newcastle, I liked the scale and

perspective and I feel It best matched

the aesthetic of the movie.
I studied the style of into the

spider-verse and considered things

such as colour, the neon glow of the

city, harsh block shapes, bright yellow

taxis, lights etc...

I manipulated the photo in places and

digitally painted the rest, while editing

contrast and colour accordingly.
The movie is set mostly at night so I

made the image darker, highlighted the windows and lit up the lamps. I made the sky a popping purple colour and broke parks of the sky up into simple shapes. I also added colourful lines in the same way the artists do to make the buildings stand out against the dark background.

The dominant colours in the image are green and purple, contrasting secondary colours to make the image pop. I found it a little challenging working out how I would replicate the electric vibe of the film- especially how to make the buildings 'move', But using my problem solving skills I carefully examined the concept art and considered how they would do it themselves- I selected the buildings and duplicated them then lowered the opacity and increased saturation. This gave it the glitch effect.

Next:

After completing this response I want to explore turning real places into stylised concept art environments. I like the feel of escapism and it pushes me to explore something I've never done before - environmental art

I want to look for more artists, someone completely different to Patrick O'Keefe.

I love the style of this animation and the art.  How they show movement with the 3d effect and action lines on both the scene and the characters. I found out that to re-create the look of the comics, the artists added in hand drawn action lines and visualised sounds - see where the sharp lines fly off the drum kit.

I love the variation in style and how each character has a unique stylisation. - see penny Parker in the style of a classic Japanese anime/manga.

- see Spiderham with his over exaggerated movement, like an old cartoon.

Also in keeping with the comics they added in thought bubbles and writing as well as comic sound expressions such as 'ker-pow!'.

The use of colour is impressive and bold. I was very drawn into the way they visualised New York- as a neon modern city that is electric and busy- the lines around the buildings making them appear as if they are vibrating with energy.

Its psychedelic style is vibrant and dynamic, and I will create a response using my own photo.
